The animation on the left is based on the sculpture Kisel by Monica Sand, and was produced with her assistance. Kisel is Swedish for Silicon. The sculpture is inspired by the crystal structure of silicon. The picture on the floor in the animation is taken from a Scanning Tunnelling microscope image of the atoms in a crystal of silicon.

The animation on the right shows the structure of a diamond crystal. Each carbon atom in the crystal bonds covalently with four other carbon atoms.
